Description
One sizeable white hydrangea bush decorated our expansive front yard when we bought our house. The bush is about six feet tall and spreads out into a sphere of white mid-summer. Each cluster is two hands full of flowers. At first, they have a light lime green tone, but as they mature, they whiten until late fall, when they turn to a golden brown. I challenged myself to study the plant, the flowers, the tones, and shadows. I slowly added shadows by painting in the very light greens, blues, yellows, and grays to keep the white paper white. The shadows add depth and recede into the background and bring the whiteness of the paper forward, thus forming the flowers. The process is called negative painting.
