Description
As a child, I remember the beautiful monarch butterflies migrating across our Nebraska ranch on their way from Mexico and back from Canada. We had enough milkweed to provide a small summer breeding ground.
Monarchs are known as the king of the butterflies because they are considered to be the most beautiful butterfly. The Monarch butterfly’s life cycle includes a metamorphosis egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Four generations hatch each summer, but only the last generation migrates to southern California or to the mountains of Mexico to hibernate. In March they head back north in search of milkweed on which to lay their eggs. The milkweed plant is essential for both their migration and their summer breeding. Much of the milkweed has been eradicated and thus destroying their natural habitat. Sadly, they are now included in the United States endangered species list.
I painted this Monarch butterfly on Arches 140 lb. Hot-Pressed watercolor paper with Dr. Ph. Martin Hydrus Watercolors and Daniel Smith sap green.

I too love the Monarch Butterfly and am concerned about their reduction. Lovely painting and educational summary.
