Artist's Description
My childhood home was simple, but Mom decorated it with her many touches, love. Outside the front door amidst the cracks in the old sidewalk grew giant red poppies.
I ask her how she was able to get them to grow, and she would say, “Simple. Just toss the seeds and walk on by.”
I tried that, and it did not work for me. I dug some of Mom’s plants and took them home to transplant in my yard. They did not grow. I bought plants at the garden center. After Twenty-eight years, I was able to have one successful plant. Two years later, before it bloomed, we moved away.
Mom passed away in 2013. I miss both Mom and her poppies.
The painting is watercolor on Arches 140 pound Cold-Pressed paper.

About Bonnie Young
Bonnie Young connects to rural life and landscape because they reflect her roots. She discovered the love of painting the light and shadows and their effects on her subjects as she studied nature. While still attending elementary school in a one room schoolhouse in the Nebraska Sandhills, she began painting. For most of her adult life, she lived in the midwest and west. She studied art at Kansas State University, the Canton Museum of Art in Canton, Ohio, and the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, Colorado. In Colorado, she studied under Janet Nunn, an award...

Brilliant reds and oranges much like the poppies here. I'm not sure why, but my poppies pop each year. If you lived close I'd give you some.
