Artist's Description
Moving to Maine meant starting over without any flowers in our yard after spending thirty-years developing an English garden in Colorado. I took several walks around the neighborhood and more trips to a local greenhouse. After the first winter, everything died except the parsley and cilantro. I tried for three years before some flowers made it through the winter. That third year, I planted two hydrangea bushes and one azalea bush. All three shrubs are alive, and I think they will survive. I have found the climate and soil here very challenging.
I took a reference photo of my azalea bush last spring and had a struggle painting them as well as growing them. It is another month or more before we get spring flowers, but I am hopeful.
I painted these flowers on Arches 140 lbs. Cold-Pressed watercolor paper with Dr. Ph. Martin Hydrus Watercolors, Daniel Smith Watercolors.

About Bonnie Young
Bonnie Young connects to rural life and landscape because they reflect her roots. She discovered the love of painting the light and shadows and their effects on her subjects as she studied nature. For her, painting is an artistic articulation of life captured in watercolor or digital creations. Watercolor allows her to build depth and detail through layering glazes. While still attending elementary school in a one room schoolhouse in the Nebraska Sandhills, she began painting. For most of her adult life, she lived in the midwest and west. She studied art at Kansas State University, the Canton Museum of Art in Canton, Ohio, and the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, Colorado. In Colorado, she studied under Janet Nunn, an award...
