Artist's Description
The snow is melting and days are now in the ’40s in Maine. Winter this year was not harsh, but I still felt the need to paint something with color and free-flowing lines to throw off the constraints of winter. While in Florida in February, I took a reference photo of a large orange Hibiscus. I told my husband that I probably needed to paint it a different color, but I found myself drawn to it in its natural hues. Unlike my usual paintings, I did not draw out the painting. I put down some Mask and let the flower evolve from my one-inch brush and my arm.
I painted the Hibiscus with Dr. Ph. Martin Hydrus Watercolors on 140 lb Arches’ hot-pressed watercolor paper.

About Bonnie Young
Bonnie Young connects to rural life and landscape because they reflect her roots. She discovered the love of painting the light and shadows and their effects on her subjects as she studied nature. For her, painting is an artistic articulation of life captured in watercolor or digital creations. Watercolor allows her to build depth and detail through layering glazes. While still attending elementary school in a one room schoolhouse in the Nebraska Sandhills, she began painting. For most of her adult life, she lived in the midwest and west. She studied art at Kansas State University, the Canton Museum of Art in Canton, Ohio, and the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, Colorado. In Colorado, she studied under Janet Nunn, an award...
