Description
The cheery yellows of the daffodils are the first flower to indicate spring in my yard. Our son gave me seventy-five daffodil bulbs for Mother's Day three years ago. That first year only about twelve bloomed. This spring, I think all seventy-five are blooming. I laughed when I enlarged my reference photo. I had captured a bee, so he had to be in the painting.
Painting daffodils is one of my spring rituals. I enjoy returning to previous paintings to see my growth as a painter. This year, I decided my daffodil painting needed to be a closeup. As I painted, I used some of the colors left on my palette to create the effects of shadows and shapes. First, I used a watery mix of green on the petals. Then, I mixed mauve and yellow to create a muted yellow shade for some of the other shadows. The stems and basal leaves are ultramarine blue and yellow. An amazing thing happened with those two colors, partially blending and creating green. One stroke of my bush and there were the very basal leaves I wanted. This magic only happens with watercolors.
