Description
When we move into our 150-year-old house, our yard had two very old maple trees and a wooded area at the back but, the rest of the yard was bare. Our neighbor had a huge ugly electrical panel that was our view out the kitchen windows. Our grandson started a trellis but did not get it finished. We still gazed out to view the electrical panel. A year ago, I noticed two small volunteer shrubs. I determined that they were barberries. This past summer I decided to prune them, so they were not tall and spindly. Hidden under the leaves were hundreds of berries. I saw them as a potential painting. As I started to write about this painting, I found out that they are editable and have extraordinary health benefits, are used in Persian cooking, and are sold on Amazon. With our early November freeze, ours are now frozen on the bushes. Just out of curiosity, I may pick frozen berries.
I painted these barberries on Arches 300 lb. Cold-Pressed watercolor paper with Dr. Ph. Martin Hydrus Watercolors and Daniel Smith watercolor paints.
